New families are often confused when the club switches rules in the spring. There are three main competitive styles in American wrestling, and most serious wrestlers eventually do all three.
Folkstyle (scholastic / collegiate)
The American school style — this is what you'll do first. Wrestled in youth leagues, middle school, high school (NFHS rules), and college (NCAA rules). Emphasizes control: you score for taking your opponent down, escaping from bottom, reversing position, and turning their back toward the mat. Riding your opponent and working for a pin is a big part of the game. Season runs roughly November through March.
Freestyle
The international style (Olympics, World Championships) for men and women. Wrestled in the US mainly in spring and summer under USA Wrestling. Emphasizes exposure: turning an opponent's back to the mat scores even without control, leg laces and gut wrenches turn one takedown into a flurry of points, and there's no riding — bottom wrestlers are quickly restarted on their feet. Matches are faster and higher-scoring.
Greco-Roman
Freestyle's upper-body-only sibling (Olympic style, men's and increasingly women's events). No attacking the legs at all — everything is throws, bodylocks, and arm drags. Wrestled in the same spring/summer season as freestyle. Even a little Greco makes folkstyle wrestlers dramatically better at hand fighting and upper-body position.
| Folkstyle | Freestyle | Greco-Roman | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where | School season (Nov–Mar) | Spring/summer, international | Spring/summer, international |
| Core idea | Control your opponent | Expose their back | Expose their back, upper body only |
| Leg attacks | Yes | Yes | No |
| Wrestling on the mat | Long top/bottom battles | Brief — turn quickly or restart | Brief — throws and gut wrenches |
| Governing body | NFHS / NCAA / state bodies | USA Wrestling / UWW | USA Wrestling / UWW |
Which should a beginner do?
Whatever your local club is running right now — just get on the mat. If you're starting in fall or winter, that's folkstyle. If it's spring, freestyle practices are a fantastic (and less crowded) entry point.
Why spring freestyle is a cheat code
Wrestlers who compete in freestyle and Greco in the off-season rack up extra months of mat time every year while their folkstyle-only rivals sit idle. Ask any college coach: the kids who wrestle the international styles in spring separate from the pack. More in The Off-Season.
