Every wrestling journey starts with finding a room. Here's where to look, in order of likely success — plus how to submit your club to our growing directory.
Browse our directory first
The StartWrestling Club Directory lists clubs with the info beginners actually need — beginner policy, girls' programs, cost, and practice nights — filterable by state and level. It's new and growing; the national searches below cover everywhere we haven't reached yet.
Search by who you are
Youth & middle school families
- USA Wrestling's club search — the largest club registry in the country; search chartered clubs by location through the membership system.
- Your state's USA Wrestling chapter — every state has one (find yours via usawrestling.org); state sites list clubs and season calendars.
- AAU Wrestling — the other major youth sanctioning body, strong in many regions.
- Ask the local high school coach — they know every feeder club in the area and will happily point you (you're their future roster).
High schoolers
- Your school's athletic office — if there's a team, sign-ups run through them; if not, ask which nearby school accepts co-op wrestlers (many state associations allow it).
- Local clubs (searches above) for off-season training alongside the school season.
College students
- NCWA — the college club wrestling association; check their team list for your school.
- Campus rec / club sports office — ask specifically; some wrestling clubs fly under the radar.
- No team? Start one. A semester of paperwork, a lifetime of "I founded that."
Adults
- USA Wrestling club search — look for clubs listing open/adult practices.
- MMA and BJJ gyms — many run dedicated wrestling classes with drop-in friendly cultures; often the easiest adult entry point.
- College open mats — club teams frequently welcome community members.
- Full adult roadmap: the adult wrestler guide.
Questions to ask any club before joining
- Are coaches background-checked and SafeSport-certified? (Non-negotiable — see safety)
- What's the beginner experience — separate group, mentor pairing, or sink-or-swim? (You want one of the first two: here's why)
- Is competition required or optional for first-years?
- What's the weight philosophy? (At youth level, the only right answer is "kids wrestle their natural weight")
- Can we try 2–3 practices before committing? (Almost every club says yes)

We're building a club directory purpose-made for beginners — with the info the big registries skip: beginner-friendliness, girls' program status, adult practices, and cost transparency.
Email clubs@startwrestling.com with: club name, town/state, levels served (youth / MS / HS / adult), practice location & nights, governing body (USAW/AAU/NCWA), beginner policy, girls' program info, cost, and a contact for families. We'll review and add you.
Are you a school, league, or state association interested in partnering on the directory? Same address — put "Partnership" in the subject line.
Nothing within driving distance?
That's not a dead end — that's an underserved market and a future club with your name on the founding documents. The youth club playbook · the college/adult version.
